Anaerobic Performance Assessment
Why is an anaerobic assessment of performance useful?
While endurance sports typically involve predominantly aerobic training, anaerobic performance remains an important trainable component for endurance athletes. There are several reasons why assessing anaerobic performance is relevant for endurance athletes, for example 1) tactical decisions for athletes, i.e., knowing your capacity to make a break away (explosive power), 2) determine whether your power-endurance is a limiting factor of your ability to perform, 3) increases top end aerobic energy system development, and 4) determining your potential for injury. All of these allow you and your coach to better adapt your training programme.

These assessments are also very important for a wide range of other athletes such as trail runners and team sports where athletes often have to be agile, change direction at speed (e.g., defensive agility). As such, understanding these anaerobic components of performance such as Reactive Strength Index, peak power and eccentric utilisation ratios are of the upmost importance.

Test details
This important assessment will determine a number of anaerobic factors which relate to your performance, and these are dependent on your sport. As such, we will start with a 10-minute consultation to determine your individual needs and this will dictate what tests we do and in what order we do them to best maintain the validity of each assessment.

All tests that are conducted for these assessments are maximal and so we will conduct a robust series of warm up exercises.
​
The assessment of maximal anaerobic power, end power and fatigue index are all calculated from a Wingate test performed on a Watt Bike. This involves a further warm up followed by a maximal 30s sprint test at a set wattage for your body weight and sex.

The tests of vertical power, reactive sprint index and stretch-shortening cycle are all maximal jump, and drop-jump based assessments.
